Plavix, distributed by Bristol-Meyer Squibb and Sanofi-Aventis, was approved
by the FDA in 2002 for reducing the risk of having a future heart attack or
stroke. It is used to prevent the buildup of platelets which are tiny cell fragments
in the blood that have a role in blood clotting. It is recommended for people
who have suffered from a recent heart attack or stroke, or who have peripheral
arterial disease (PAD).
Taking Plavix and aspirin is also recommended for people who have been hospitalized
with heart-related chest pain or had a certain type of heart attack conditions
doctors call acute coronary syndrome (ACS). It also helps keep platelets in
the blood from sticking together and forming clots, which helps keep your blood
flowing. This helps protect you from a future heart attack or stroke.
Recent studies have found that the drug is linked to serious side effects particularly
in patients with previous gastrointestinal bleeding conditions. According to
a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, patients with a history
of PUD who took Plavix were 12 times more likely to experience a recurrence
of ulcers than those who took a combination of aspirin with a heartburn pill.
Other studies show that a combination of Plavix and aspirin doubles the risk
of heart attack, stroke, and death in patients with no history of heart disease.
This research shows that Plavix offers NO significant benefit over low-dose
aspirin therapy, and may in fact cause serious life-threatening risks to patients.
